Hello, everyone,

I've been reading the Old Testament and there's a particular chapter that seems a bit offensive: 31 of Numbers. In this chapter, god tells Moses to wipe out a village of "Midianite People." The end is most offensive, where Moses is ordering the executions of all men, women, children, cattle, and even goats. But, Moses then makes one exception, "But the young girls, who have not known men by lying with them, keep alive for yourselves!" What is Moses saying here? To "keep alive for yourselves!"? I mean, essentially, the only thing that can be gleaned is that he's telling his armed, conquering troops to keep young, virgin girls as slaves; I guess you can use your imagination beyond that. Did this really happen? Can someone please tell me why god would murder children, or even encourage the slavery of young virgin girls to conquerors?

Thank you,

The Old Testament, especially during the covenant of Moses and Joshua, were horrible times. There was almost no mercy, sin was everywhere, and entire cities were destroyed, and not always by people. Remember the 10 Plagues? How about Sodom and Gamora? these times were horrible and I would never want to go back in time to them. That being said, I believe there is a passage in the Bible that talks about this. Moses was telling his soldiers to accept them as wives, not to rape them. I don't remember where the passage is, but it was a law that if you do what Moses told them to do, you were to take the girl as your wife, and if she doesn't want you, you let her go, and she is free.

God, being the one who gives life, has the right to take it away. Keep in mind that these holy wars were part of God's judgment on these nations. The nations had sinned against God and this was their punishment. Among other things, these nations were guilty of child sacrifice, so it's not as though God was telling Israel to go kill everyone in Pleasant Ville.

Remember what God said concerning Sodom, if there were a few righteous persons in the city God would spare it. He wouldn't destroy the whole city for the sake of a few. I think we can say that the same is true in these other instances. As Abraham said, "Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just? (Genesis 18:25).

The girls kept alive were taken as wives. Again, this is part of the punishment, but it wouldn't be considered as abhorrent in those days as it is today. Today we have the idea that each person should be free to choose who they marry and who they don't. But by and large this isn't how marriages were conducted in those times. They were arranged. So the girl usually didn't get to say "I don't want to marry him..." The girls were part of a warrior culture surrounded by other warrior cultures, so if they had been left to themselves they would probably have met a worse fate than being married to an Israelite.

If Moses wanted his soldiers to accept them as wives, why did he tell his troops to kill all those who had already "known men by lying with them"? And what about the children? Why would Moses have so much compassion to help the innocent, powerless women, but would slaughter children and even infants?

It doesn't make any sense. "I'm so compassionate, that I'll let my troops have virgin girls. But take the other children and dash them to pieces!" Something makes me suspect whether Moses acted out of real compassion and love or simply out of the greedy, selfish impulses that come with anyone bent on conquest.

Many times sin corrupts and men violate each other , animals, children. some places needed to be wiped out partially and some needed to be wiped off the face of the Earth, including all there stuff because even the stuff is defiled. I'm thinking the boys were defiled and the young girls weren't.

Your implying that God had Israel doing woman raids to increase there concubines, if this was the case you would find lots of corrupted Jewish blood. instead they were slaves, not sex slaves.

People know that God will judge the world by Jesus Christ and the sinners will be punished.

In the Old Testament God judged them right then if they continued in sin for a certain period of time that was horrible.

God left nations alone unless they would pervert Israel from the truth or try to wipe Israel out.

That is why God went against nations for they would try to pervert Israel from the truth or try to wipe out Israel.God had to protect Israel for the savior Jesus Christ came from the Israel.

If God did not protect Israel the other nations would pervert her from the truth or try to wipe her out and that would mean no salvation for the world.

It is not God that is mean but man that is mean and God had to protect Israel because they are the salvation of the world by Jesus Christ.

Every world power had the revelation of God from Egypt to the last kingdom the 10 horn kingdom and went against it.God had to allow other nations to put them down because they would try to pervert the world with their falsehood and were cruel.

God only went against people if He knew they were a threat to the salvation of mankind.

In the New Testament God does not judge people on earth and the love that Jesus showed is the love that applies now.

God is allowing the world, all the people that do not love Him,to come together and rebel against Him.

God said He is going to gather all the nations together to battle them, the people that do not love God so it is God's plan to allow all the nations to come together that do not love Him to battle them.

God is not judging people on earth as in the Old Testament because the love that Christ showed applies now and God is allowing the nations to come together to go against the truth to battle them.

There is not one nation that was in the truth of God's word including America but Israel when she was in the truth.

America is actually occultic that allows all religions to be practiced there.America is actually the key to the antichrist kingdom coming about.

     Matt

[They all accept it. Each and every last one of them: what god did to those children is justifiable in some way.]
